The History of Plantation Shutters

Window shutters have a rich history, seeing wide use today in both residential and commercial properties. Wholesale Shutter Company, the leading custom shutters manufacturer, discusses their history.

Beginnings: The First Design

Window shutters were created to provide security and light control as well as to keep rain from seeping inside the home. In ancient times, our ancestors only used animal hides as window covers before inventing wood shutters.

The early design of window shutters only allowed them to open and close due to the solid wood of which they were made. It wasn’t until the Middle Ages when the louvered window shutters were introduced. These louvers were also non-movable and only tilted to prevent rain from entering the room. Window shutters easily have been one of the most favored window treatment products since their invention.

Innovation and Name Origin

During the sixteenth century, glass windows were becoming popular, and shutters were created to fit both inside and outside the window. In the 1800s, the louvered shutters were given an upgrade. They were no longer stagnant, and you could freely move them aside instead of simply tilting the shutters up and down. The term “plantation shutters” was eventually coined in response to how widespread they were among American plantations in the south.

Today, they are now classified simply as exterior window shutters.
